Voice assistant compatibility, energy monitoring, scheduling — how to choose a smart plug that fits your setup.
A smart plug is one of the easiest smart home upgrades — plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and control any device remotely. But buying the wrong one means limited functionality or setup frustration.
Voice assistant compatibility first
This is the most important filter: - **Amazon Alexa**: Works with virtually every smart plug; look for "Works with Alexa" badge - **Google Home**: Look for "Works with Google Home" badge - **Apple HomeKit**: Requires a HomeKit-certified plug — fewer options, but tighter security and local control - **Matter**: The new universal standard — Matter-certified plugs work with all ecosystems
If you have multiple voice assistants, choose a plug that supports all of them, or select a Matter-certified model.
Profile size matters
A smart plug that blocks the other outlet on a duplex receptacle is a daily frustration. Look for slim-profile or side-outlet designs that leave the second socket accessible.
Energy monitoring
Some smart plugs display real-time wattage and track cumulative kWh usage in the app. This is valuable for understanding which devices draw the most power. Kasa, TP-Link and Emporia are popular brands with solid energy monitoring.
Scheduling and automations
All smart plugs support scheduling via their app. Higher-end models support local control (commands work without internet access) and integration with home automation platforms like Home Assistant, Google Home Routines or Apple Shortcuts.
Outdoor smart plugs
Outdoor-rated smart plugs (typically IP44 or IP65) can control holiday lights, landscape lighting and patio devices. Confirm the weatherproof rating and load capacity before buying.
Before you order
Check that your home Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz compatible (most smart plugs do not support 5 GHz). Verify the plug's maximum load in watts — typically 1800W (15A), which is sufficient for most devices but not high-draw appliances like space heaters.
