Outdoor Outlets and Weatherproof Covers: What Every Homeowner Should Know

November 5, 20245 min readBy Tom Becker

GFCI requirements, in-use covers, WR ratings — the specs and codes that keep outdoor outlets safe in rain and snow.

Outdoor electrical outlets require specific products and proper installation to meet code and stay safe through seasons of moisture, temperature swings and UV exposure.

GFCI is required outdoors

Every outdoor outlet must be GFCI-protected — this is a National Electrical Code requirement, not an option. If your current outdoor outlet lacks a RESET/TEST button, it is either unprotected or fed from an indoor GFCI outlet (check a nearby bathroom or garage for a tripped GFCI before buying a replacement).

In-use covers vs. standard covers

A standard bubble cover only protects the outlet when nothing is plugged in. An "in-use" or "while-in-use" cover has a hinged door that closes around a plugged-in cord, keeping the outlet weatherproof even during use. The NEC requires while-in-use covers on outdoor outlets.

Weather-Resistant (WR) receptacle rating

Outlets installed outdoors should be rated "Weather Resistant" (WR). This designation means the outlet's components are built to resist corrosion from moisture and UV degradation. WR GFCI outlets are widely available and required by the NEC for outdoor locations.

Extra-duty covers for harsh climates

In regions with heavy snow, ice or salt air, look for extra-duty in-use covers made of cast aluminum or UV-stabilized polycarbonate. These outlast standard plastic covers by years in harsh conditions.

Deck and patio outlet placement

Outlets near water (pools, spas) require more extensive GFCI protection — consult an electrician for those installations. For general patio or deck use, a single GFCI outlet with an in-use cover at 6.5 feet max height meets code in most jurisdictions.

Before you buy

Confirm your electrical box is rated for outdoor use (weatherproof boxes are larger and have gaskets). Match the cover style to your box — standard single-gang in-use covers fit most residential outdoor boxes.
